Waregem: Guide


Waregem is a municipality located in the Belgium|Belgian province of West Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Beveren (Waregem)|Beveren, Desselgem, Sint-Eloois-Vijve and Waregem proper. Waregem is also part of the county of Kortrijk. On January 1 2006 Waregem had a total population of 35,852. The total area is 44.34 square kilometre|km² which gives a population density of 809 inhabitants per km².

Waregem is well-known for its annual horse races at the local hippodrome, including the Grand Steeple Chase, which takes place the first Tuesday after the last Sunday of August. In local language this event is known as Waregem Koerse and is accompanied by a week of festivities.

Waregem is the hometown of ex-soccer team K.S.V. Waregem and present team S.V. Zulte-Waregem.

The World War I Flanders Field American Cemetery and Memorial is located on the southeast edge of town and is the resting place for 368 American military who died during the liberation of Belgium in World War I. The chapel is inscribed with the names of 43 Missing in Action whose remains were never recovered or identified.
