Margaux is a village and commune in France|commune in the Gironde département in France|département of south-west France, that produces red wine. Population: 1,358.
The village lies in the Haut Médoc wine making region on the left bank of the Garonne estuary, north west of the city of Bordeaux.
Margaux is the name of the wine Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée|appellation, Margaux AOC, that encompasses the village and the neighbouring villages of Arsac, Labarde, Soussans and Cantenac, and is the most southerly of Médoc's appellations. The commune makes almost entirely red wine.
The Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855|1855 classification contained more wines from Margaux than from any other appellation, and its most well known vineyard, Château Margaux, was one of only four wines to be awarded the Premier Cru status. Château Palmer, a third growth in Cantenac, is also a famous Margaux.
In the acclaimed film directed by Steven Spielberg in 1993, Actor Liam Neeson plays the role of Oscar Schindler, in Schindler's List, who asks the maitre d' of the wine cellar selections in a high class restaurant, maitre d' replies back that he has excellent German Riesling, but Schindler asks whether he has any "Margaux" amongst other varietals.
Château Margaux was mentioned in the 2003 film starring Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton, Something's Gotta Give. The lead character played by Nicholson, Harry Sanborn talks about how he bought the entire collection of Château Margaux on auction at Christie's at a wine auction.
