Frankenthal: Guide

Frankenthal is a city in southwestern Germany, in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate).

History

First mentioned in 772. In 1119 an Augustian seminary was built. The ruins still stand today in the center of the town.

In the second half of the 16th century, people from the Netherlands persecuted for their religious beliefs, settled in Frankenthal. They were industrious and art loving people who brought economic prosperity to the town. Some of them were important carpet weavers, jewellers and artists whose "Frankenthaler Malerschule" (Frankenthal school of painting) acquired some fame. In 1577 the settlement was raised to the status as a town by the count palatine Johann Casimir.

In 1600 Frankenthal was converted to a fortress. 1621 Spanish siege during the Thirty Years' War, occupation by troops of different alliances, the crafts and the trade are ruined. 1682 reconstruction.

1689: the town is burnt to the ground by French troops in the war of the Palatinate and Orleans.

1750: Under the rule of elector (Kurfürst) Karl Theodor becomes a town of factories. Even mulberry trees are planted for silk production.
1755 - 1800 Frankenthal porcelain factory.

1797 under French patronage; from 1816 onwards under Bavarian rule.
1859 beginning of rapid industrial expansion.

1938: The Jewish synagogue, built in 1884, is burnt to the ground during the so called Kristallnacht.

1943: In a bomb raid the centre of the town is destroyed almost completely.

1945: first American, then French occupation; dismantling of the industry; rebuilding of the town.

1946: Part of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, one of the German "Bundesländer". Today Frankenthal again is seat of some medium sized industries.
