Gifhorn: Guide

Gifhorn is a city in Germany. It is located in Lower Saxony, close to Hannover, Celle, and Wolfsburg, at the place where the Ise river flows into the Aller. Gifhorn has about 43,350 inhabitants, and is capital of the district Gifhorn (district)|Gifhorn.

Gifhorn was first mentioned in 1196, when it was located at the crossing of two important merchant routes, one transporting salt between Lüneburg and Braunschweig, the other transporting cereal|grain between Celle and Magdeburg.

Schools in Gifhorn include the Humboldt Gymnasium, the Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium, Fritz-Reuter-Realschule, Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Realschule, Albert-Schweitzer-Hauptschule, Alfred-Teves-Hauptschule and the Berufsbildenden Schulen I and II.
