The perfect location of Greiz at the river Elster and the stream Göltsch made it a fast rising village. It kept expanding during the last 1000 years. It was first mentioned as town in the 13th century. Later the Reuß, a ruling German family, built 2 castles in Greiz. The "Oberes Schloß" and the "Unteres Schloß". Both were built by famous architects and are still unique.It has a huge park. This park is an awarded "english Garden". Its landscape is unique and it is a visit worth. The Thomas Straße which is full with Jugenstil houses is also very famous, pictures of the houses are shown all over the world even in Barcelona.
In the Second World War Greiz didn't experienced much damage. Just 3 of the 5 brigdes in the town were blewn up.
Greiz has now a population of about 24,001 people and is sadly losing people because of a huge unemployment rate and too little births.
Greiz is the capital of the district Greiz.
Momentally it is governed by Dr. Andreas Hemann a mayor from the SPD.
Industries are: Thioplast, paper, machines and special sensores.
