Herdecke: Guide



Herdecke is a municipality in the district of Ennepe-Ruhr, North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. Its located south of Dortmund in the Ruhr Area and is known as Die Stadt zwischen den Ruhrseen (lit. The city between the Ruhr lakes).

The city is located in the area of the Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR).

Geography

Herdecke is located in the Ardeygebirge, the northwestern part of the Sauerland, between Dortmund in the North and Northeast, Hagen in the South, Wetter (Ruhr) in the Southwest and Witten (Germany)|Witten in the West and Northwest.

The mountain rocks are made up of carbon. Quarries are founded mining sandstone, only one is still run today.

All of the lakes of the Ruhr are reservoirs. They are Hengsteysee and Harkortsee.

Climate

The average precipitation is between 850 and 900 mm. The average temperature is around 10.6°C.

History

Herdecke used to be part of Grafschaft Mark.

The Herdecker Kornmarkt was famous until the end of the 19th century.

In 1739, Frederick William I of Prussia received Herdecke city rights.

In 1939, Ende incorporated into Herdecke.

Population history

The population between 1939 and 1993 grew at 147.25%. The municipal reform kept the population over 25,000. The population after 1993 slowly declined.

Tourism is popular especially around and on the two Ruhr lakes. There is Bachviertel, the historical part of Herdecke.
