The historical center of Hildesheim consisted of over 1900 half-timbering buildings and was often called "Nuremberg of the north" up to the 2nd World War. By the war influences 90% of the center were destroyed. Only few lanes in the southern center remained unchanged. The center therefore consists mainly today of buildings of the years 1950 to 1970. Many important historical monuments were reconstructed, however, completely with great effort. At this, the changes of the last centuries were often removed. The original form of the buildings could arise again. Two church buildings therefore were already declared to , in 1985. Please, correct my bad English!
Hildesheim is connected to the autobahn network from A7.
The city center is small enough to see everything on foot. Bus services and taxis are available.
