Mülheim: Guide



Mülheim an der Ruhr, also called "City on the River", is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. It is located in the Ruhr area between Duisburg and Essen, Germany|Essen, bordering to the south of the City of Oberhausen and 30 km to the north-east of Düsseldorf.

It is home to many companies, especially in the food industry such as the ALDI|ALDI Süd Company (Karl Albrecht) and The Tengelmann Group.

Notable people


Hugo Stinnes, an industrialist and founder of the German People's Party (Deutsche Volkspartei, or DVP) was born here in 1870.
Fritz Thyssen, an industrialist associated with the National Socialist German Workers Party|Nazi Party of Adolf Hitler was born here in 1873. He fled the party following the events of Kristallnacht and was eventually captured. He was imprisoned in the concentration camp at Sachsenhausen concentration camp|Sachsenhausen until the end of the war. Following that, he fled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he died in 1951.
Helge Schneider, an actor, film and theatre director, comic, singer and jazz musician was born here in 1955.
Fritz Buchloh, football goalkeeper at two World Cups
