Marktbreit: Guide

Marktbreit is a city in the district of Kitzingen (district)|Kitzingen in the Regierungsbezirk Unterfranken in Bavaria situated at the most southern point of the Main river. It is the birthplace of Alois Alzheimer who first identified the symptoms of what is now known as Alzheimer's Disease. Marktbreit has about 4,000 inhabitants (2004).

History

It was first mentioned as "broite inferior" in a document of the count of Castell in 1266. It is very likely that there was a settlement for some hundred years at the delta of the Breitbach. In 1557, Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor|King Ferdinand allowed the settlement to hold markets, and the name Marktbreit was given to the small town. In the 17th and 18th century Marktbreit was an important marketplace because the shortest way from the Danube to the Main (which ends in the Rhine) starts in Marktbreit.
