Templin: Guide



Templin is a small city in the Uckermark district, in Brandenburg, Germany, with a population of 17,535 (2004). It lies at and is 60 m above sea level.

The town was first mentioned in 1270. As of 2005, it has come to be known as the place where Angela Merkel grew up. Templin has a modern grammar school built in 1997. Templin's city walls are small, but complete. There are 3 main gate towers and several modern (parts of the wall torn down) entrances. Templin recently built a spa and has quite a strong tourism industry. Many tourists from Berlin come to Templin to enjoy its many glacial lakes and forests. Templin has many eastern era 'blok' houses (highrise apartments) and smaller neighborhoods. There is no discotheque in Templin, the closest is in Milmersdorf. Templin's main Protestant church is the Marien Kirche. The town square with the old town hall building is surrounded by an active downtown. There are many shops and restaurants in the area and an outdoor market every week. Templin is located in the province Uckermark. Petersdorf, Milmersdorf and a few other small villages rely on Templin for many services. Although Milmersdorf has its own holistic doctor and grocery store. Prenzlau, to the north is the capital of the Uckermark.
