Matera, Italy: Guide

Matera is the capital of the Matera province in the World Heritage site and one of Southern Italy's many important attractions.

Understand

Matera is a fairly big city. One of its quarters is the old city. Just outside the old city are the Sassi - cave houses dug into the limestone rocks. The sassi are located on both sides of a valley. On the north side the Sassi Baresi have been partially commercially developed as offices and housing. The Sassi Caveosi, on the south side, are the most historically interesting.

Get in

It's often easier to reach Matera from Apulia (Bari) than from Campania (Naples). The from Bari takes 1h 3min.

There is a bus to Metaponto (€4)

Get around

See

Old city. From the station walk down via Roma to Pl Venet and take the stairs down into he old city.
Caveoso cave churches. Entrance to the four main ones is €6.

There are many restaurants in the old city as well as outside.

Drink

Cafe Stone Age close to St. Antonius church in th Caveoso has a nice little terrace with flowers in pots and cold beers from all over the world.

Sleep

There are hotels in Matera but staying at the many B&B's in the old town can be more interesting.

Cope

There is a tourist office at Viti Marco and one at the old city. The Viti Marco one has English-speaking staff which is very helpful and will give you a map and a booklet on Basilicata
