Montecatini: Guide

Montecatini is the name of several locations in Tuscany, Italy.

The most famous of these is obviously Montecatini Terme, in the province of Pistoia, one of the most famous health resorts in Italy, which has thermal springs and is an attractive town with large parks and gardens.

Located above (and belonging to the comune of) Montecatini Terme is the beautiful hill-top village, Montecatini Alto ("Upper Montecatini"), from which there are spectacular views of the lower town and the surrounding Tuscan landscape.

The two are connected by a funicular railway constructed in 1897 which is in regular daily operation.

Another comune with a similar name, Montecatini Val di Cecina, is located about 100 km to the south, in the province of Pisa. This village, located on the crest of a hill with a spectacular panorama of the valleys beneath Volterra, was a very important mining town in the Middle Ages, under the Medici dynasty. The mines have been restored and turned into a museum.
