Notably, Pope Innocent IX|Innocent IX was the bishop of Nicastro from 1560 to 1572. The cathedral, an ancient temple, with the episcopal palace, was outside the city; having been pillaged by Saracens, it was restored in the year 1100, but it was destroyed in the earthquake of 1638, with the episcopal palace, under the ruins of which most valuable archives were lost. The ruined castle at Nicastro served as the place of imprisonment of Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor|Frederick II's son Henry (VII) of Germany|Henry. The place suffered greatly from the earthquake of 1638, which also destroyed the Benedictine abbey of St. Euphemia, founded by Robert Guiscard. In 1818 the ancient See of Martorano, the former Mamertum (the first bishop of which was Domnus, in 761), was united to the Diocese of Nicastro.
