Pontassieve is a Italian region Tuscany, located about 14 km east of Florence, nearby Fiesole, at the confluence of the Arno River|Arno and Sieve rivers. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 20,581 and an area of 114.4 km2.All demographics and other statistics: Italian statistical institute Istat.
The territory of Pontassieve borders the following municipalities: Bagno a Ripoli, Borgo San Lorenzo, Dicomano, Fiesole, Pelago, Rignano sull'Arno, Rufina, Vicchio.
History
Pontassieve is mentioned for the first time in the Middle Ages, when the History of Florence|Republic of Florence built the castle of S. Angelo to watch the roads connecting to the Casentino and Romagna areas. When the Medici family built a bridge, the city received the current name (meaning "Bridge on the Sieve").
Pontassieve was an important argicultural center, especially for wine, the seat of a market until the early 1900s. The construction of the Florence-Arezzo and Florence-Borgo San Lorenzo railways allowed the city to grow also as an industrial hub. During world war 2 the railways station were repeatedly bombed by Allied planes.
