Jelenia Gora: Guide

Jelenia Góra () is a town in southwestern Poland. The name of the city means "deer mountain" in Polish language|Polish and German.

Jelenia Góra is situated in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship (since 1999), previously capital of Jelenia Góra Voivodeship (1975-1998). Prior to 1945 it was one of the largest cities in the former German state of Silesia.

History

Jelenia Góra was probably founded by Slavic people|Slavs in the Middle Ages. It received German town law|city rights in 1288 and was gradually Germanization|Germanized. The town was annexed with Lower Silesia by the Kingdom of Prussia during the Silesian Wars. It became part of the German Empire in 1871 and until 1945 was part of Germany. After 1945 the German inhabitants were Expulsion of Germans after World War II|expelled along the lines of Potsdam Agreement and replaced with Poles|Polish settlers.
