Santa Pola: Guide

Santa Pola is a coastal town located in the comarca of Baix Vinalopó in the Land of Valencia, Spain, by the Mediterranean Sea. It has an area of 58.6 km2 and, according to the 2003 census, a total population of 22,253 inhabitants.

The town has important salines (artificial lagoons to get salt when seawater evaporates), known as Natural Park of Salines de Santa Pola, that have remarkable birds and vegetation. The town was settled over the ruins of a significant Ancient Rome|Roman city called Portus Ilicitanus (literally, Harbour of Elx), and the castle that was constructed in the 16th century improved the development of Santa Pola. The town has an archeological museum.

Santa Pola is, at present, a tourist town with good beaches and areas to fish. The nearby island of Tabarca (also known as Illa Plana) can be visited by ship.
