Nynäshamn Municipality: Guide

Nynäshamn Municipality is a Municipalities of Sweden|Municipality in Stockholm County, in east central Sweden, with the port town of Nynäshamn (pop. 13,169, 2004 approx. pronunciation "neeneshamn") as seat.

To Nynäshamn belong several islands and recreational areas. There are over 1,000 islands and islets in the municipality. Nynäshamn boasts sandy beaches, areas suitable for long walks, for riding horses and for bicycling, all popular activities. The municipality may have one of the most varying natures in its county, as it allows both activities related to the Stockholm archipelago, such as boat tours, as well as boggy grounds, agricultural areas, urban areas and even forests with Moose|elk and deer.

Nynäshamn is also the place where the ferries to the island Gotland goes from. In the Stockholm area, that is perhaps what Nynäshamn is most known for.
Several cruise ships on tours in the Baltic Sea also stay in the harbour, because they are too large to go into Stockholm.

Its history is traced several thousands of years back. About 50 historical remains are considered notable enough to be marked on maps and attract visitors. They include both grave fields from the Iron Age, rune stones from the Viking Age as well as newer curiosities such as 18th century farms and cottages.

The current mayor of Nynäshamn Municipality is Ilja Batljan of the Swedish Social Democratic Party.
