Aarau: Guide

Aarau is the capital of the northern German-speaking and predominantly Protestantism|Protestant. Aarau is situated in the valley of the Aar, on the river's right bank, and at the southern foot of the Jura mountains, and is west of Zurich "." Encyclopædia Britannica, 20 December 2006.. It was founded around 1240 A.D. by the counts of Kyburg. An ancient fortress, Aarau was taken over by the Habsburgs (who derive their name from the nearby Habichtsburg or "Hawk's Castle" which was their original home) in 1264; then by the Bernese in 1415, and in 1798 became for six months (March to September) the capital of the Helvetic Republic. Because of its ancient history, it has a number of ancient towers dating back to the 1200s; the town's church dates from 1471 and the town hall from 1762). The cantonal library contains a Bible annotated by Huldrych Zwingli.
