Schaffhausen is a city in north-eastern Switzerland on the river Rhine, next to the Germany|German border.

Schaffhausen is an old city that become a member of the Swiss Confederation in 1501.
In 1944 Schaffhausen was accidentally bombed by United States airforce that mistook neutral Swiss town for Germany.

From Zurich. - Getting to Schaffhausen is a little tricky, as one has to cross German territory.
If you wouldn't cross the German border, it's also possible to take the train over Winterthur.
