Sunderland does not have a station on the mainline rail services; travellers will have to change at Newcastle upon Tyne Central Station, or get off the train at Durham (England)|Durham and travel into Sunderland by bus 222 which operates from 6am to 11pm. The Trans-Pennine trains from Liverpool terminate at Sunderland however, and North East coastal trains travelling between Middlesbrough and Newcastle normally stop there.
The Tyne and Wear Metro was recently extended into Sunderland and there are a number of stops. Travelling from Newcastle, disembark at either Sunderland Station or the Park Lane Interchange Metro stations for the city centre.
From South (A1):
Leave the A1 at the A690 (Durham) junction and head East toward Sunderland along the A690. At the A19 roundabout, continue on the A690 for South or central Sunderland. For North Sunderland (e.g. Stadium of Light, Seaburn), head north up the A19 to the A1231 (Wessington Way) junction, turn off the A19 then head East into Sunderland.
From North (A1):
Pass the Angel of the North heading south along the A1. Leave at the junction signposted A1231. Follow the road on through Washington (Tyne and Wear)|Washington onto the A1231. At the A19 roundabout, head straight on for North Sunderland. For South or central Sunderland, turn South onto the A19 and take the first turn-off. Head East (Chester Road) into Sunderland.
Bus Sunderland boasts the busiest bus station in the UK, outside of London Victoria - The Park Lane Interchange. Each part of the sprawling City of Sunderland enjoys good, reliable and relatively quick links with the city centre. Park Lane Interchange also boasts an underground Metro (light Railway) station, busy taxi rank and National Express (coach) links with the rest of the UK, including regular services to and from London.
Rail Sunderland is not currently serviced by direct main line links. TO reach Sunderland by train you must either, change at Newcastle or change at Darlington and pick up a Transpennine Express service. Regular trains provide links between Newcastle, Sunderland, Seaham, Hartlepool, Seaton Carew, Billingham and Middlesbrough.
2007 will see the reintroduction of a direct rail service between Sunderland and London Kings Cross.
Metro The Tyne & Wear Metro System was finally upgraded and linked to Sunderland in the early noughties. Making access from South Hylton through the City Centre to St Peters, The Stadium of Light, Seaburn and beyond.
Taxi Taxis are a tremendously popular form of transport in Sunderland. Reasonably priced, clean and safe, they offer a very speedy means of getting around the city. Distinctive white cabs can be hailed and all of the well signposted taxi ranks are weel serviced. Particularly the ranks at Sunderland Central and Park Lane Interchange.
Alternative Transport Sunderland has a beautifully refurbished marina with reasonable mooring charges. The city also supports the national cycle networks and has been a keen advocate of pedal power. Sunderland lies directly on the Walney to Wear (W2W) and Coast to Coast (C2C) cycle routes.
